Department of Justice Joins Lawsuit to Stop California's Congressional Map

The US Justice Department has officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.

This court case, submitted to federal court, challenges the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.

"California's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.

The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive legal scrutiny.

"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.

Constitutional Challenge

The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.

"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.

Political Context

The legal battle constitutes the major response by the Democratic party in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.

Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.

Wider Consequences

The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.

The political group controlling the majority will shape the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.

  • Legal counsel for the plaintiffs is being handled by a prominent law firm
  • The firm's founder currently serves as senior DOJ official
  • Nevertheless, this attorney has been recused from the current litigation
